Body, remember …
Body, remember not only how much you were loved,
not only the beds on which you lay,
but also those desires for you that glowed plainly in the eyes,
and trembled in the voice-
and some chance obstacle made futile.
Now that all of them belong to the past,
it almost seems as if you had yielded to those desires-
how they glowed,
remember in the eyes gazing at you;
how they trembled in the voice, for you, remember, body.

Constantine P. Cavafy

    • Thanks! Took me a while to settle on a translation of this. There are several, all similar, with just a few words difference … a few words can make a big difference, though!

      • Oh, I know! I have preferred translations for all of my fave poets, especially Neruda. Even one word or slight difference in punctuation can totally alter the meaning of a piece.

      • Haha! I am super picky about my translations too. One version was promptly dismissed because of a period. I simply didn’t agree a period should go in that spot! 😀

      • That’s seriously all it takes to make a difference! I labor over every word and punctuation placement in my own work, and it is something I take special heed of in works of translation.
